Students vote Pulp Fiction ‘coolest’ film of all time

20th September 2007 Print
Students have voted Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction’ as one of the ‘coolest’ films of all time, and the movie poster they’d most like to plaster on the walls of their student digs.

‘Pulp Fiction’ topped a Yorkshire Bank poll of over 1,000 students across the UK, gaining 20% of the total vote. The Oscar winning cult classic starring John Travolta and Uma Thurman was particularly popular among male students, attracting over a quarter (27%) of their vote. This was closely followed by Tarantino’s original gangster flick, Reservoir Dogs which attracted almost a fifth of the male vote (19%).

Romance rather than gangsters and gore appealed to female students. ‘Chick flick’ favourites, Dirty Dancing and Breakfast at Tiffany’s - the film that made Audrey Hepburn famous, are their joint cinema favourites, with both receiving more than a fifth (21%) of the female student vote.

These latest student screen favourites have been uncovered by a Yorkshire Bank survey undertaken while developing their new Student Account which offers a high credit interest rate of 3.3% (APR) and a 2 for 1 cinema card. This allows students and their friends to see the latest movies for half price at all Vue and independent cinemas until September 2008.

Playing it cool?

However, when asked to name their favourite films of all time, gangsters and romance were beaten by good old fashioned escapism - Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean topped the overall student box office chart with more than one in five students (22%) voting for the swashbuckling adventures of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. This was closely followed by the Harry Potter series, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which bewitched 19% of all students.

Gary Lumby, Yorkshire Bank’s Head of Retail, said: “With students working harder than ever, a trip to the cinema is the perfect way for them to escape from their studies or part time work. With almost half of students living away from home and learning to manage their money, the Yorkshire Bank two for one cinema card makes seeing the latest films more affordable than ever.”

According to Yorkshire Bank's research, 74% of students will be renting a room in university halls or other private accommodation. The average accommodation cost for students in the UK is £64.42, while their average weekly entertainment bill comes to £40.20.

Guilty pleasures

18% of female students weren’t too ashamed to admit that Disney’s Princess Diaries is their favourite guilty pleasure flick, while just 2% of male students were proud to proclaim The Sound of Music as their number one movie to watch when their housemates aren’t home.
