120 million reasons why the ‘special one’ has departed
The shock sacking of Chelsea Manager Jose Mourninho has lead to widespread rumours of why the ‘Special One’ has left his post at Stamford Bridge. Losing the dressing room and a fall-out with Roman Abramovich are current conspiracy theories, but do the clues lie in Mourninho’s financial management?According to leading personal finance information site Fool.co.uk, the Portuguese coach is least financially-savvy of all the top managers in England – losing almost £120million on transfers over the last four seasons.
Although his time at Chelsea brought trophies to the club, they have come at a hefty price. Mourinho spent £169million on new players but brought only £49million in transfers back to the club - a loss of £120 million.
David Kuo, Head of Personal Finance at Fool.co.uk, says: “Jose was a great manager and a great character in English football, but unfortunately his financial prowess fell some way short of his ability to manage his players.
“No matter how much money Mr Abramovich puts into the club, Chelsea will still need to make money. Jose’s gambles in the transfer market have paid off on the pitch, but the financial impact of his big signings may have cost him his job.
“Some people say football is a game of life or death, but it isn’t. It’s much more important than that. It’s about being around for the second half when sound finances mean prizes.”
