Over £10bn will be withdrawn from ATMs during December

Sainsbury’s Bank, which only has 'free to use' cash machines in its estate, estimates that during December, £348.06 million a day or £241,708 per minute will be withdrawn from UK cash machines.

Overall, it estimates that some 7.59 million cash machine transactions will be made every day during the festive month and that £10.79 billion will be withdrawn from ATMs. If realised, this would be the first time that more than £10 billion has been withdrawn in any month.

When compared to 2003, this would be 1.14 million more cash machine transactions a day and an extra £114.35 million a day being withdrawn.

Alex Blake, Head of ATMs, Sainsbury’s said: “People are more reliant on ATMs than ever before and the peak time for cash withdrawals is December. This helps explain why there has been a 29% increase in the number of ATMs between December 2003 and June 2007.”

Sainsbury’s Bank now has almost 1000 free-to-use ATMs all of which are conveniently located and accessible to customers at Sainsbury’s stores, petrol forecourts and convenience stores all over the country.
