Football fans are top of the league

Loyal football fans who have opened savings and mortgage accounts with Britannia Building Society have helped to return almost £4.21 million to their favourite clubs this year.

Britannia offers Save and Support accounts with thirteen Premiership, Championship and First Division Clubs, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Stoke City and Ipswich Town. It also offers junior accounts and mortgages with a number of these clubs.

Each year the Society returns a bonus to the clubs. This is based on the amount of money in the savings accounts and the number of supporters taking mortgages. This year has seen a record amount returned to the clubs.

Peter Mansfield, Head of affinity relationships at Britannia, said: "This is a huge amount of money, all generated by loyal fans.

"Our Save and Support accounts, in particular, are a great incentive for people of all ages to put some money aside and support their favourite club at the same time."

The clubs will use the money for their future development, with most of them putting the money in to their players' academies.
