At Nationwide's Annual General Meeting (AGM), held today at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham, the votes of well over a million and a half Nationwide members helped to raise £250,000 for its chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Graham Beale, Nationwide chief executive, presented Ciaran Devane, Macmillan chief executive, with a cheque for £250,000 before the AGM proceedings.

Commenting on the vote, Geoffrey Howe, Nationwide chairman, said: "I am delighted that so many of our members have chosen to use their vote this year and that, in doing so, they have helped raise £250,000 for our flagship charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. The money raised will be used by Macmillan to help fund two Cancer Information and Support Centres in Durham and Plymouth, which will make a real difference to many people's lives.

"This vote is also a ringing endorsement of our mutual status. It is important to Nationwide that, as a member owned organisation, our members take part in this democratic process. They have shown their support for the Society and our directors who, I believe, have the skills and experience to lead Nationwide to further success in the future."
