HSBC student bursary awards
From 11 August 2008, students will be able to send a short online application of approximately 150 words, explaining why they think they deserve to receive one of the bursaries, which fall under the categories of Science & Engineering, Arts & Humanities, Business & Commerce and a further award for an outstanding application. The applications will then be short listed and the final decision made by a panel of judges, including:
Joe Garner, HSBC's Group General Manager of Personal Finance Services,
Aaron Porter, Vice President of the National Union of Students,
Tim Henman, Former Tennis Pro,
Dan Germain, Head of Creative at Innocent Drinks,
Beth McKillop, Director of Collections and Keeper, Asian Department, Victoria & Albert Museum, and
Maxine Wrigley, Chief Executive of A National Voice.
The bursaries will be awarded to the four students during November 2008 and will be released in three sets of £10,000, over three years. HSBC will keep in touch with the students over these three years to encourage and ensure they are achieving their goals.
Lucy Payne, HSBC's Youth and Student Manager said: "HSBC invests heavily in financial education and literacy, focusing a lot of attention on helping young people and students to be responsible with their finances. We offer a very straight forward student account which has no gimicks. We could easily have given away thousands of ipods, but this approach doesn't necessarily help students make the right decisions about their finances."
HSBC is also offering 6 % credit interest on the first £1,000 for the first year, an interest free overdraft of up to £2,000 with no overdraft fees and 2 years free worldwide travel insurance, all part of the 2008 HSBC Student "No Gimmicks" Service.
