Nine in ten Brits sleep through money worries

24th February 2009 Print
Just 10% of Brits admit to losing sleep over their finances despite the threat of the worst recession in decades. In fact, snoring is a much bigger blight on the nation’s sleep patterns. This remarkable figure shows money worries are not getting in the way of the country’s desire to get forty winks. In a survey of thousands of adults across the country, nine in every ten admitted their sleep was not disturbed by financial concerns.

The figures, published by debt management company Debt Lifeboat, revealed Brits are not as troubled as previously thought. The barrage of doom and gloom headlines, along with the risk of millions more unemployed and tumbling house prices has not had a significant effect on the British psyche.

But this attitude is not set to last, insists Phillip Allen, Managing Director of Debt Lifeboat: “This is not just a case of traditional British stiff upper lip, it’s more serious than that. There are too many people sticking their head in the sand when it comes to personal finances. While some are trying to save in 2009, our findings show a significant proportion of the country has very little money set aside.

“Almost half of respondents admitted they aren’t saving or don’t think it’s possible, but this isn’t the right attitude to take. People need to take a proactive approach to their finances: budgeting, discussing problem debts with their creditors, and regularly checking bank balances are just a few examples.

“A good night’s sleep is vital to a healthy lifestyle – so, in many ways, it’s pleasing to find our nation is sleeping so well. However, more concern needs to be shown for personal finances. All the signs are that things are going to get a lot worse before they begin to improve. Being in control of your finances will be key to ensure sweet dreams in the future.”
