Leeds Building Society donates £9,610 to Marie Curie

3rd July 2009 Print
Leeds Building Society has made a £9,610.73 donation to Marie Curie Cancer Care, which is one of the Society's partner charities.

This donation has two components to it. The first part of it is £5,694.09, which is the annual payment from the Society's Your Interest in Theirs scheme. This works by members agreeing to forego up to 99p of their interest each year. This money is then split equally between the four partner charities, Save the Children, Help the Aged, Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The second part of the donation is £3,916.64, which is the Charitable Incentive Donation from the Society's Annual General Meeting. Leeds Building Society donated 10p for every postal vote received and 20p for every internet vote. Members selected which partner charity they wanted to receive the donation from their vote.

A delegation from Leeds Building Society recently paid a visit, to make the cheque presentation for these donations, to the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford. This is one of 10 Marie Curie Hospices in the UK, which offer specialist care for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Stewart Bannister, Marketing Communications Manager said, "The Bradford Hospice is set on a hill with stunning views and offers a modern approach to care and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

"It was a great opportunity to visit the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford and see what the money raised by our members, through both the Your Interest in Theirs and AGM Charitable Incentive schemes, goes towards."

Jane Edgeley, Bradford Hospice Manager said, "We were delighted to welcome the delegation from Leeds Building Society to present the £9,610 donation to us. We are heavily dependent on donations such as this, because 58% of our funding comes through these avenues.

"The services Marie Curie Cancer Care provides are always free but we can only continue to do this through the generosity of our supporters. It costs £408 to care for a patient in one of our hospices for one day, so we are very grateful to Leeds Building Society members for the support they continue to provide."

Also joining the group for the cheque presentation was Emmerdale actor Duncan Preston, Marie Curie nurse Elizabeth Laughlin and Amy Currin, who is Marie Curie's Corporate Fundraising Account Manager.
