Council committed to employee health and well-being

15th March 2007 Print
A local council has shown its commitment to employees by introducing a healthplan from healthcare provider LHF Healthplan.

Fife Council is the third largest authority in Scotland, with around 21,500 employees. The healthplan is available to all employees at the council, ranging from street sweepers to building and maintenance employees, clerical and administration staff to teachers and social workers to fire fighters and police.

Human resources team leader Trevor Jones, said of the healthplan: “Obtaining dental and optical care can be very difficult and costly. We wanted to provide employees with an option to contribute to a healthplan. Fife Council is committed to improving access to good health for our employees.”

“We looked at all the major healthcare providers and believe LHF provide the most appropriate plan to cater for everyone’s needs, particularly with three levels of the plan available.”

Maintaining health and well-being within the workplace is a hot topic among many organisations and Fife Council is ensuring employees across the council have the opportunity to maintain and improve their health.

Responsible for delivering all local government services, the Council’s employees provide over 800 individual services to the people of Fife.

It is hoped that the introduction of the healthplan will enable employees to budget for ever increasing healthcare costs.

Employees are entitled to claim money back towards a range of everyday essential healthcare treatments including dental checks and visits to the optician as well as money back towards the cost of specialist consultations, glasses and contact lenses. The healthplan also covers a wide range of complimentary therapies, including homeopathy, reflexology and acupuncture.

Norma Stacey key account manager at LHF, commented on the introduction of the healthplan: “Health and well-being is of great importance to Fife Council and it is committed to improving access to good health. As the plan is accessible to all employees it gives everyone the opportunity to manage their health, happiness and well-being.”

In addition to the healthplan Fife Council has introduced a comprehensive voluntary benefits package, which includes discounts on holidays and travel, shopping, entertainment and financial services, as well as tax and NI free childcare vouchers and bikes.

Starting from as little as £1.38 per employee per week, LHF employee-paid healthplans are a fast growing and popular benefit that can help employees budget towards their everyday essential healthcare costs.
