Companies dismiss dental benefits

1st April 2008 Print
Latest research by Healthplan provider HSA has revealed that contributions towards dental benefits are the most valued by employees.

The research, which surveyed 321 companies as part of HSA’s Annual Dental Survey 2008, found that 65% believed their employees would most value dental benefits. This was above other healthcare benefits such as optical, complementary therapies, Employee Assistance Programmes and cholesterol and blood pressure checks.

Despite this, 67% of companies would not consider implementing dental benefits as they perceive them to be too expensive. Richard Halley, Head of B2B Sales at HSA comments: “By dismissing dental benefits companies could be letting their employees and themselves down. Especially since over a quarter of working people surveyed as part of our consumer survey claimed that looking after dental benefits was unaffordable, and 42% thought they could do more to look after their oral health. This could impact recruitment and retention as dental benefits could really attract employees. Additionally, if working people are putting off visiting the dentist due to cost, this could result in their oral health worsening, which could affect sickness absence.

“Companies should listen to their health conscience as dental benefits do not need to be expensive, and can be purchased on a stand alone basis or as part of a package of benefits in a Health Cash Plan. They are simple and affordable, so can be extended to the entire workforce, and will enable employees to access better dental care, whether for check-ups, treatment or emergencies,” concludes Richard.
