Don’t let the recession spoil the summer recess
Britain’s children face a recession-hit summer holiday of fewer family days out, less hours spent with their parents and reduced time spent playing outside, according to a major new study.
The research conducted by Kellogg’s revealed that two-thirds of parents believe the economic downturn has had an effect on family life, and reductions have been made across the board in spend on toys, games and sporting equipment for kids. Also, a third of parents say that chances are their children will spend more time indoors this summer because of lack of money.
Family days out and trips to attractions such as the zoo and theme parks have also been badly hit. The parents surveyed admitted that four-in-ten planned excursions have been put on ice and because we’re working longer hours to demonstrate commitment to employers, less time will be spent with the children compared to just a year ago.
At the best of times the summer holidays can be tough for families, but just because we’re feeling the pinch doesn’t mean we have to ditch the family fun. There is lots of fun to be had with the kids this summer doing simple things that won’t break the bank.
