Old dairy in Surrey given new lease of life

The derelict Dairy Crest site in Cheam, East Surrey, is to be given a new lease of life by Linden Homes, which has begun a major restoration of the historical dairy buildings as part of a wider development project.

Built in 1930, the site came into operation in 1933 when United Dairies made it their distribution depot, and continued to operate for seventy years before finally shutting its doors in 2003. The building has always been popular with locals due to its attractive exterior and consistency with the rural surroundings of Cheam village.

Over the years the Dairy has become a local landmark and is much loved by Cheam residents, some of whom still remember the days when it was used as a base for horse and cart milk deliveries.

As a result of a series of meetings with members of the local community, where residents put forward their views regarding the protection of the Dairy, the historic building is being restored and integrated into Linden’s sympathetic scheme of 39 apartments, named The Dairy Mansions.

Linden’s plan to renovate the original buildings and convert them into eight new homes was widely welcomed by local residents, who were keen to preserve this piece of local history.

The development is accessed by a sliding electronic gate, which is only operated by authorised approaching traffic, resulting in slow vehicle movements in and out of the development. The 39 apartments will also help to satisfy the local demand for new homes and bring 12 much-needed affordable homes to the area. The development is surrounded by parkland, with a number of facilities close to hand and good commuter links into London.
