Calling all Windmill enthusiasts!

5th June 2007 Print
Shirley Windmill The dream home for all windmill enthusiasts has just come onto the market with Townends in Croydon. Whilst the properties in Postmill Close look normal enough, they are lucky enough to share their road with Croydon’s only windmill.

Built in the mid 1850’s by Richard Alwen to replace an earlier post mill which was destroyed by fire in 1854, Shirley Windmill worked until 1892 when it became uneconomic to maintain and was abandoned by the then owner Alfred Rayson. After years of neglect it was bought by Croydon Council in 1951 and, after a painstaking restoration funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, first opened to the public in 1995. Shirley Windmill has now been fully restored to working order and houses touch screen interactive displays and information panels to provide a fun and educational day out.

Standing in the shadow of the windmill is a modern four-bedroom detached family home. Downstairs the property offers a large living space, kitchen / breakfast room, double garage and a lovely rear garden. On the market at £550,000, the property also benefits from three good size bedrooms and a large master bedroom with ensuite.

The property is located in an excellent area for families; with schools and a great selectionof local shops and parks easily accessible. Croydon is rightly renowned for its transport links and Postmill Close is no exception. The fast and frequent train links of East Croydon station are less than 2 miles away and Coombe Lane tram station, providing a link to the District line, is a short walk (0.7 miles). The road links are also excellent with the A23, M23 and M25 easily accessible.
