‘Cinema Nights’ every night in Purley, Surrey
Townends in Croydon are marketing a one bedroom, first floor apartment forming part of Astoria Court which is built on the site of the former Astoria Cinema in the High Street, Purley, Surrey.Originally built in 1933, and taking only 20 weeks to construct, the Astoria opened in 1934 with the double bill “The Way to Love”, starring Maurice Chevalier and “Ever in my Heart”, starring Barbara Stanwyck. Going through several changes of ownership during its lifetime, the cinema was finally sold to Associated British Cinemas, closed in 1999 and was demolished in early 2000 to make way for the large six storey residential building which was completed in 2001.
At the entrance to Astoria Court, a mosaic was commissioned and subsequently designed by Gary Drostle. The mosaic, entitled “Cinema Nights” depicts an audience watching Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in a scene from the film “It happened one night”. This was one of the big films of the year the Astoria Cinema opened.
Astoria Court has proved popular with celebrities and previous occupants of the building include a past premiership footballer and TV host, as well as a former boy band member.
