Kensington and Chelsea library to get BDP facelift
Architects and engineers BDP, together with cost consultant Cyril Sweett are appointed to develop design proposals for the reordering and refurbishment of the Grade II Listed, 1955 - 1960 Central Library in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.Designed and handsomely detailed in the classical tradition by the prominent civic architect, E Vincent Harris the Library is adjacent to the later, Sir Basil Spence designed, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall.
The proposals for the Central Library, commissioned by RBKC Family and Children’s Services, envisage the sensitive yet creative adaptation of the listed building to deliver the modern library service outlined in the borough’s Library Strategy. Including the provision of improved access, adopting best practice in sustainability and encompassing the renewal of building services, the proposals will provide fully accessible and enhanced facilities for the capital and the local community.
