A room with a view in Chiswick

Arlington Park Mansions which overlooks Turnham Green Common were first occupied in 1906, and the current residents have recently celebrated the one hundredth birthday of their home. The famous tenant, Edward Morgan Forster maintained a pied a terre at 9 Arlington Mansions from 1939 until his death in 1970.
Forster was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and was best known for novels such as Howard’s End and A Room with a View which reached 7th position of the literacy greats of the 20th century, published by the Guardian newspaper in association with Penguin. A Passage to India, an account of India under British rule was Forster’s last novel. After this he moved on to publish short stories and non-fiction.
In 1953 Forster was made a Companion of Honour and in 1969 he accepted an Order of Merit, however, in 1949 he refused a knighthood.
When it came to his private life Forster tried to hide away from the public gaze, but he was known to have had a relationship with a London policeman and wrote the novel with a homosexual theme, Maurice, which was not published until after his death.
