Berkeley, a double winner at the building awards
The Berkeley Group triumphed twice at the 2008 Building Awards on Tuesday evening, the biggest construction industry event of the year, picking up awards for sustainability and its Central London Tabard Square development. One of the UK’s leading urban regenerators [just for Headline Property], The Berkeley Group, won the WRAP Award for sustainable construction for its pioneering construction methods and the use of sustainable materials on projects from St George Wharf in Vauxhall to Thames Valley University’s site in Brentford.
The judges commended Berkeley for its commitment to the sustainability agenda confirming the Group’s position as a frontrunner in the fight against global warming.
This is Berkeley’s second sustainability-led award this year. In February the Group was recognised at the City of London’s Sustainable Cities Awards for its extensive climate change commitments including reducing waste sent to landfill by 50%, two years ahead of the Government’s targets. These external endorsements and accolades are testament of the Group’s ongoing commitment to sustainable design, development and business operation.
Berkeley Homes (North East London) was also victorious winning the Major Housing Project of the Year award for Tabard Square in Southwark.
Tabard Square involved the regeneration and transformation of 1.2 hectares of brownfield land within Central London. The striking mixed-use scheme comprises 572 apartments in three contemporary buildings including a 22-storey tower, 29,000 sq ft of commercial space and retail and community facilities.
The judges were extremely impressed with Berkeley Homes’ handling of the design and development process resulting in a state of the art high rise, high density residential development that complies with the latest government planning guidance and provides a commendable 46% of affordable accommodation split between shared ownership, rented and key worker homes linked to Guy’s Hospital.
