Converted warehouse offers stylish living in London

Converted warehouse offers stylish living in London Warehouse living has always been popular with discerning buyers but genuine examples have been hard to find since the glut of conversions in the 1980s. However, Sugar House in Whitechapel is a fresh-to-the-market, Grade II listed warehouse conversion, continuing in the vein of those found in Wapping and Shad Thames. Berkeley Homes (South East London) Ltd has worked with the stunning proportions and original features at Sugar House to create 42 unique properties, skilfully marrying echoes of the old with a contemporary style of living.

Each of the one, two and three-bedroom apartments is a one off, with individual layouts and a superior quality specification.

The duplex and triplex apartments offer the height of luxury city living, normally only found in modern skyscrapers, in this instance captured beautifully in a magnificent Victorian building. It’s rare to find such a fine conversion project so close to the Square Mile, Tower Bridge, Tower of London and St Katherine Docks.

Sugar House’s key location allows residents to walk to the City’s financial district, as well as to a number of central transport links, including Aldgate and Aldgate East underground stations, Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street rail stations and the DLR at Tower Gateway

Sugar House has all the trademarks of a classic conversion, including a stunning façade. A warm red brick stock is the main building material, which provides a stunning contrast to its more contemporary glass and steel neighbours. The mellow brick is punctuated by creamy Portland stone and granite detail.

Defining Sugar House is a quarter size replica of Big Ben, which sits proudly atop the building. Berkeley Homes (South East London) Ltd has worked with the clock’s original manufacturers, Thwaites & Reed, to restore the timepiece to its full working order.

Internally, Sugar House still bears many redeeming features from its historic past. Once a sugar warehouse, the building also served as the headquarters for the Co-Op Wholesale Society. Today, the Grade II listed legacy includes arched feature windows, dramatically high ceilings and an intricate former boardroom ceiling, which will feature in a handful of the converted apartments.

All the Sugar House residents will benefit from a grand entrance via a large stone archway. Once inside, the communal foyer lies directly ahead, with its sweeping iron balustrade staircase and original wooden handrail.

Piers Clanford, Managing Director of Berkeley Homes (South East London) Ltd, comments: “Many conversion projects try to pass themselves off as a warehouse but the truth is they are just regular 20th century buildings being given a makeover. Sugar House has Grade II listed status and a solid warehouse heritage, making it an authentic proposition for astute London buyers. What’s more, such a conversion so close to the City of London and of this standard is very rare.”

The highest quality specification has been selected to ensure that the Sugar House apartments offer luxury living at its best. The Italian designer kitchens feature stone work surfaces and fully integrated Siemens appliances. Bathrooms include double ended baths; stone walk-in shower areas and underfloor heating. Purchasers have the option to add a state of the art multi-room audio system, with integrated i-pod docking station and pre-wiring for wall-hung plasma TVs.

Prices for the apartments at Sugar House start from £465,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and from £675,000 for a two-bedroom apartment. Just one three-bedroom penthouse remains for sale, priced at £1.85 million.
