Barratt West London wins ‘Housing Project of the Year' Barratt West London's position as a leading developer was cemented when it won ‘Housing Project of the Year,' for Great West Quarter, in Brentford, at the highly respected Mail on Sunday British Homes Awards; an annual event which showcases the country's most pioneering house builders and architects.

It was Barratt's night, as the developer also won ‘Best Small House of the Year' for its innovative eScape home in Sittingbourne, ‘Affordable Housing Development of the Year' for Tachbrook Triangle in Pimlico, and topped the bill with ‘Homebuilder of the Year.'

Assael Architects, responsible for the design of Barratt's Great West Quarter and Tachbrook Triangle developments also received their industries top honour of ‘Architect of the Year.'

Andrew Storey, managing director of Barratt West London, collected the award for ‘Housing Project of the Year' at a black-tie event in front of 500 guests at The London Marriott Hotel, in Grosvenor Square, in the presence of the Housing Minister RT Hon Caroline Flint MP and the RIBA President Sunand Prasad.

"I'm delighted that The Mail on Sunday is continuing to showcase the best in British talent," commented Ms Flint, "And while we face challenges in the housing market, it is vitally important we maintain our position, nationally and internationally, as a world leader in sustainable design."

Great West Quarter incorporates 773 one, two and three-bedroom apartments, including both private and affordable homes, as well as shops, restaurants, a bar, a health club, an art gallery, a crèche, an hotel and serviced apartments. When complete, the development is anticipated to provide 1,500 jobs for local people. "This regeneration impresses with its sheer scale and quality," said the judges of The Mail on Sunday Awards.

The central piazza, extending to over an acre, has been designed as a venue for public events and will provide the setting for a number of creative art installations. This piazza, along with courtyards and play areas, will create a focal point for community activities. The landscaping has been designed by Whitelaw and Turkington and will include a green corridor for wildlife, while bat and bird boxes constructed on the site will enhance natural biodiversity.

"Our vision when we purchased the site five years ago was to restore it to its former glory and to transform it into a successful large scale regeneration scheme. Winning this award was the ultimate validation of all our hard work and effort," said Andrew Storey, managing director of Barratt West London.

In Great West Quarter, the Grade II listed Wallis House will provide commercial space along with approximately 100 residential apartments. Though Wallis House, an Art Deco icon, is an impressive reminder of times gone by, the apartments themselves embody modern sophistication and pragmatism. Studio apartments in Wallis House are available from £225,000, one-bedroom apartments are available from £285,000 and two-bedroom apartments are available from £399,995.
