Barratt acquires two sites in trendy Bethnal Green

"In common with Shoreditch, Hoxton and Dalston, Bethnal Green is leaving behind its old image as the gritty heart of the East End and is becoming increasingly fashionable and arty while remaining affordable" said Barratt London managing director Alastair Baird.
"These two developments, while relatively small, recycle scruffy urban land and buildings to provide good value housing opportunities in an area of strong demand."
Both of the Bethnal Green sites were previously in industrial use. The redundant low-rise buildings at Dunbridge Street, which is being developed first, have already been cleared and preparatory site work is under way.
The £13 million development, on a triangular site fronting Dunbridge Street, will be called Drapers Yard. Designed for Barratt London by ATP Architects, it will comprise a total of 34 one, two and three-bedroom apartments in three linked elements rising to a maximum of five storeys. Prices are expected to start at around £275,000 and sales are scheduled to begin in April 2009.
Eleven of the homes at Drapers Yard will be for affordable occupation by local people. The development will also include a NHS health clinic.
The nearby Gossett Street site, which stands adjacent to the Jesus Hospital Estate Conservation Area - a famous Victorian residential quarter of the East End - is another contemporary development. Called Tria, the £15 million scheme has been designed by Formation Architects and will be developed later in 2009.
Tria will offer 51 apartments and two townhouses in a single building rising to six storeys, crowned by a stunning communal roof terrace and overlooking Warner Green. Fifteen of the homes will be for affordable occupation by local people.
Both sites are within easy strolling distance of Bethnal Green tube station and well positioned for the City, Shoreditch, Haggerston Park, and Columbia Road Market. They are also well-positioned to take advantage of the East London London line extension which comes to this part of Hackney in 2010.
