Buy a piece of Sugar House history

29th January 2009 Print
There is great cachet in owning something truly unique, a one-of-a-kind piece of history that no one else has. In a home, original period features restored to full glory provide that distinction, adding greatly to the appeal and value of a property.

At Sugar House there are only limited opportunities left to buy a new home containing its impressive period features, which include an intricate inlaid ceiling and a clock tower which is a quarter replica of Big Ben.

Sugar House is the dramatic transformation of the original headquarters of the Co-operative Wholesale Society – now more commonly known as the Co-op, and former sugar warehouse. This impressive Grade II listed red brick building of elegant proportions was built in 1887 and has now been painstakingly renovated by Berkeley Homes to create 42 unique apartments. All of the period features are being carefully brought back to life under the expert guidance of English Heritage, giving purchasers the opportunity to buy a piece of history.

Sugar House is part of the City Quarter development on Leman Street, E1 close to the City of London. Its remaining penthouses offer the best of the period features.

The former boardroom of the Co-operative Society’s headquarters occupies the double height top floor of Sugar House. The boardroom features an elaborate carved ceiling, with intricate original mouldings which are being meticulously restored, along with elegant wood panelling. Three new and unique duplex penthouses will be carved out of this impressive space. The central one of which has a central glass elevated roof, allowing natural light to flood in.

Another penthouse will incorporate the base of the clock tower as an octagonal mezzanine level room. The clock, which is a quarter size copy of The Great Clock of Westminster (Big Ben), has been restored to full working order by its original manufacturers Thwaites & Reed, although fortunately for the new resident, the clock will no longer chime, as it has now been converted to operate with a digital mechanism, rather than pendulum.

Sugar House is not only a historic building, but its new apartments combine that heritage with the modern, very high specification interior which Berkeley Homes is well-known for. Those reserving within a certain period will also have the opportunity to choose a bespoke package selecting their own finishes in bathrooms and kitchens. However, buyers will have to be quick as this is an exclusive, limited opportunity.

Piers Clanford, Managing Director of Berkeley Homes (South East London) Ltd comments: “The apartments at Sugar House really are one of a kind. Each one is different and the impressive period features are strictly limited, so purchasers should not delay in reserving their new home. What is more, there is a limited period within which buyers can personalise their apartment with their own choice interior finishes, making for a truly unique home.”

Prices of apartments in Sugar House currently start from £465,000 for a one-bedroom apartment. For further information or to view the show apartments, contact the City Quarter Sales and Marketing Suite at 99 Leman Street, E1, which is open 10am to 6pm weekdays (until 8pm on Tuesdays) and from 10am to 5pm on weekends.
