Homeowners throw away millions when moving house

17th March 2007 Print
Homeowners throw away millions when moving house According to The Hoults Group, the nationwide removal and storage company; each household, on average, disposes of ten bin bags worth of household items at the time of moving house.

To ensure valuable and quality items don’t simply end up in the bin, the Hoults Group and the YMCA have joined forces to launch a new simple and free service at the time of your move. When you move house with The Hoults Group you are provided with bags to fill with unwanted household items including bric-a-brac, books and clothes. The Hoults Group will deliver the goods to YMCA’s nationwide network of shops.

All sorts of objects can be re-used or sold and the YMCA has seen donations as weird and wonderful as baths and caravans in the past! Items will be used to raise money to fund schemes which help disadvantaged and homeless young people in the local community and across the country.

No item is too big, so if you want a fresh start in your new home and need to dispose of furniture or larger items, call the YMCA and the charity will can collect them directly from you.

Stuart Emery, from The Hoults Group, comments: “It never ceases to amaze me what we have seen thrown away during just one house move. The new service fulfils a genuine need without any hassle or fuss. By linking up with the YMCA we have made it as simple as possible for our customers to dispose of items they don’t need, give something back to the community, and allow for items to be re-used rather than simply ending up as rubbish.”

Paul Sargisson, YMCA England Head of Retail, said: “We are delighted to be linking up with the Hoults Group. This project will help fund our work with some of the country’s most vulnerable young people, offering them support when they need it most. We help homeless young people with somewhere to live, unemployed young people who need training to get a job, and isolated young people to feel part of a community. We rely on the public’s generosity to continue that work with over 85,000 young people each year.”

The key message of the campaign is ‘don’t bin it, bag it!’ Hoults and the YMCA are encouraging you to think twice before throwing things away when you move house, if it’s of any value or could benefit someone else, keep it, bag it up and Hoults will collect it.
