It’s not all hard hats & house bricks
Pupils looking for advice and guidance regarding career choices are sure to benefit from Persimmon Homes’ latest education initiative. Persimmon, the UK’s largest housebuilder, has launched the first in a series of careers posters which have been distributed to more than 4,000 careers offices and secondary schools across the UK.Its strap line, ‘It’s not all hard hats and house bricks’, highlights the wide range of job opportunities currently available within the construction industry and aims to direct key stage 4 students aged between 14-16 and teachers to the Persimmon Homes website (including a new Recruitment Specific site) and online version of the “Homing In on Opportunity” Careers Manual.
Alan Prickett, construction director for Persimmon Homes West Scotland, comments: “If the construction sector is to grow and flourish, it’s vital we do all we can to attract new blood, however, with such an immense range of job opportunities to choose from, it may be difficult to know where to start.
“This is where our poster will undoubtedly help and construction jobs that that may not currently be front of mind for many youngsters will be thrown into the career spotlight thanks to this new career push.”
Persimmon recognises the importance of attracting young people into the housebuilding industry and the poster launch forms part of the company’s continuous programme of activity aimed at encouraging young people to consider a construction-related career.
The company has launched a number of initiatives over the past seven years under the heading of ‘Homing in on Opportunity’, aimed primarily at 14-16 year olds. These have included a Careers Manual which was praised by The Department of Education, teachers and pupils alike for its clear job descriptions, real life case studies and national curriculum based tasks and it’s this commitment to training which saw the Group being awarded the Best Training and Staff Initiative at the Housebuilding Innovation Awards in 2005.
The Persimmon Careers Manual is currently being fully updated and reformatted with an official launch this Autumn. Aimed at encouraging Key Stage 4 pupils in particular to consider a career in construction, it is packed with all kinds of classroom activities and career case studies.
