Spring clean your home the natural way
Spring is in the air – traditionally the time to start thinking about freshening up your home. This year, why not ring the changes and instead of tackling the chores with modern cleaning products consider eco-friendly remedies which will do the job just as well? Not only will natural cleaning products mean fewer toxic chemicals in your home – but you’ll save money at the same time.
Help is at hand from George Wimpey South Midlands, whose new homes feature modern construction techniques and practical designs that help keep cleaning and maintenance to a minimum.
The leading housebuilder suggests the following top tips:
Windows and mirrors. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, then simply spray the surface and wipe off with crumpled newspaper for a streak-free sparkle.
Carpet deodoriser. To freshen carpets, sprinkle with baking soda, leave for a few minutes, and then vacuum as usual.
Wooden furniture. Mix equal parts of olive oil and lemon juice, apply with a soft cloth and buff to shine. Also ideal to make wooden floors gleam.
Toilet. Sprinkle baking soda in the bowl, leave overnight and then scrub thoroughly with a brush.
Carpet and upholstery stains. Mix equal parts of white vinegar, washing-up liquid, and water and spray on the stain, scrub with a brush and rinse with clean water.
Silverware. Revive tarnished silverware, such as cutlery, by dipping into simmering water containing a piece of aluminium foil and two teaspoons of washing soda. Then buff dry with a soft cloth.
Drains. Keep drains smelling sweet and flowing freely by pouring down a cup each of baking soda and white vinegar, followed by a litre of boiling water.
Microwave odours. To get rid of nasty whiffs, place several lemon slices in a bowl of water and turn on high for a few minutes.
