The variety of colours available today is as limitless as your imagination and there are a number of unusual choices such as glitter, metallic and suede-effect paints to inspire your creative talents.

Whether you choose pastel hues to create a restful environment or bright, bold shades to stimulate the senses - it’s all about stamping your personality on your property.

Pam Bourne, George Wimpey Midlands’ Sales and Marketing Director, comments: “Colour is all about individual taste.

“That’s why all our new high-quality homes are painted in neutral creams and white throughout - providing the perfect blank canvas for new homeowners to add their own creative colour combinations.”

Because colour plays an important part in our lives - and can affect our mood - it’s vital that you don’t just plump for the latest paint trends but are confident you can live with your decision.

Of course, if you do realise it wasn’t the best choice after all or tire of a particular colour - simply get out the paint brush and slap on a new shade.

While there are no hard and fast rules about choosing colours, some are better suited to particular rooms in your home than others.

Here are George Wimpey’s suggestions to brighten up the rooms in your home

Welcoming white. White is a comforting colour, but can appear stark in large expanses - so not a good choice for large living areas. However, white is perfect for creating an illusion of space, so it’s ideal for small entrance hallways.

Outrageous orange. Reputed to improve appetite and enhance social interaction, orange is the ideal choice for the dining room. Energising orange also stimulates the mind so could get your creative juices flowing in the home office or study.

Rich red. Used in a large space such as a living room, red is welcoming and energising. But it is not recommended in small rooms where the colour can be claustrophobic.

Pretty in pink. Soft pink shades are perfect for sleep-inducing bedrooms thanks to its soothing and calming qualities. This quality also makes it unsuitable for home offices.

Perfect purple. Varying from deep mauve to lilac, depending on the shade, purple can be used in any room of the house. Lilac is particularly effective in creating a tranquil atmosphere ideal for relaxing and unwinding, so it’s also a great choice for bedrooms.

Mellow yellow. Sunny yellow is stimulating and cheering, again a good choice for the home office or study and the kitchen. In more subtle lemon shades it can work well in cool, calm bedrooms.

Blissful blue. Wash away the cares of the day by creating a bathroom haven in watery blue, renowned for relieving tension. It also has the benefit of making smaller spaces seem larger - a plus for en-suite bathrooms.

Gorgeous green. Green is a great positive colour and, depending on the shade, can work wonderfully well in every room of the house.
