Kids: Stay away from building sites

Youngsters are urged to stay away from building sites As the summer holidays are now upon us, Persimmon Homes, the UK’s most successful housebuilder, is asking parents to remind their children of the dangers associated with building sites by, encouraging them to stay safe and stay away. In an era dominated by computer games consoles and electronic gadgets, most of us would prefer to see children playing outdoors and being more active.

However, there is a clear safety message which needs to be reinforced before we encourage them to enjoy the great outdoors.

For youngsters exploring new places to play and seeking new adventures, a building site can often look like a giant playground. But the heavy machinery, large vehicles and building materials make them extremely dangerous places which should be avoided.

Many children are injured and several die each year as a result of accidents on building sites, and this is simply down to a lack of understanding of just how dangerous construction sites can be. In addition to the hazards posed by the heavy machinery, materials and vehicles, other dangers are to be found where there are road works, flammable or toxic materials and demolition works.

Adrian Evans, managing director of Persimmon Homes East Midlands said: “According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust last year over 250 children were killed as a result of accidents and 120,000 were admitted to hospital. We therefore urge parents to remind their children that building sites are hazardous places to play. By staying clear of construction sites accidents can be prevented.

“We regularly invite school children to visit our sits and see how homes are built, but that is the only time children should be on site – in small supervised groups where their safety can be assured and we always take the opportunity to tell them about the dangers associated with building sites.”

Persimmon Homes East Midlands is currently building at a number of developments across the region with sites in Huntingdon, Peterborough, St Neots, Longstanton, Grantham, Cambridge, Cambourne, Navenby, Bourne, Boston, Waltington, Witham St. Hughs, Newark and West Lynn.
