Top tips for trading up

14th August 2007 Print
Bigger is no longer always better, particularly for many househunters who are using buying a house as the ideal way to free up some of their hard earned money, according to Persimmon Homes Anglia.

Jon Gibbs, sales director for Persimmon Homes Anglia comments: “Couples whose children have left home are now choosing to downsize to smaller homes and therefore releasing cash which can then be used to pursue other interests such as travel or leisure pursuits.“

Persimmon Homes has noticed an increase in the number of ‘empty nesters’ buying at a number of the company’s regional developments, which is why the leading housebuilder is highlighting a range of tips for those thinking about downsizing.

1. Think about why you want to downsize?

Is it because you want more security? Do you want to remain independent but feel the maintenance and chores of a large house is becoming too much? Or do you want to release capital to enjoy during your retirement?

2. Choose a location to suit you

Think about where you’re moving to and whether it’s important to be close to family or to local amenities for instance. Research the area making sure there are good transport links and convenient facilities nearby.

3. Ask friends and family for advice

Downsizing is often a difficult decision, especially if you’re leaving a family home surrounded with fond memories. Those close to you can help you through the process and offer support if and when it’s needed.

4. Homing your furniture

The very nature of downsizing means you won’t be able to take all your furniture with you, so make a list of everything you want to keep, what you’re prepared to give to family and friends, what you want to sell and what could go to charity shops.

5. Ask the experts

Speak to your solicitor and accountant as well as Persimmon’s expert sales advisers about how much you want to spend on a new home, ensuring you get value for money, while still improving your lifestyle.

Jon concludes: “We have a variety of houses and apartments in desirable countryside, town and village locations that would suit those looking to trade up perfectly and I’d urge anyone interested to contact us for more information on how we can assist with the move.”

Persimmon Homes Anglia is building at a range of developments across the region including in Norwich city centre, Diss, Lowestoft, Rendlesham, Bury St. Edmunds, Harleston, Soham and Sudbury.
