Gladedale to pay stamp duty on new homes with immediate effect

18th August 2008 Print
National housebuilder Gladedale has joined a growing number of property developers putting very practical pressure on the government to announce a decision on stamp duty by offering to pick up the costs themselves in the period while the government makes up its mind.

Gladedale wants to inject new confidence into the housing market with a suspension on stamp duty - even though the government has failed to come up with a definitive answer.

Kareen Davidson, sales and marketing director for Gladedale, said: "We have heard the same rumours that the government may delay payment of stamp duty in some cases but we have decided to make the decision even easier for buyers - Gladedale will pay your stamp duty now if you reserve during August and September.

"We are aware that people are wary in the current climate. Buyers don't want to pay stamp duty for a new home, only for it to be abolished after they have shelled out thousands of pounds to the Government. We are keen to help buyers move onto the property ladder and want to remove any further insecurity for buyers."

The move could see up to £13,500 being paid towards the purchase of a new Gladedale home worth £450,000.

Currently, people buying properties for between £125,000 and £250,000 pay 1% in stamp duty at the time of sale. Those spending more than £250,000 pay 3%, while homes worth more than £500,000 incur a 4% rate.

One of the UK's leading housebuilders, Gladedale has around 150 developments across the UK.
