Kids warned to take care around building sites

Kids warned to take care around building sites School will soon be out for summer and with six weeks of spare time on your child’s hands they could be tempted to explore their surrounding areas for new places to play. For this reason, Persimmon Homes Yorkshire is urging parents to warn their children of the potential dangers posed by playing on local building sites.

According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust, last year over 300 children and young people were killed as a result of accidents and 120,000 were hospitalised*.

Youngsters may pass a construction site as part of their daily routine and think it innocent enough however, they can pose a serious threat to any child’s safety.

Karen Harrowell, sales director for Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, said: “For adventurous children looking for a bit of excitement, a building site can appear as a very attractive playground, but many don’t always appreciate the dangers. However, these are all too real I’m afraid, with many hazardous areas on site, which could and should be avoided.”

In addition to the threat posed by the heavy machinery, materials and vehicles, other dangers are to be found where there are road works, flammable or toxic materials and demolition works.

Persimmon Homes Yorkshire regularly invites school children to visit its developments to see how homes are built and the leading housebuilder is keen to stress that this is the only time children should be on site – in small supervised groups where their safety can be assured.

Karen concludes: “At Persimmon Homes, we take the health and safety of anyone who visits our sites extremely seriously and have rigorous procedures in place to ensure they are protected.”
