Retiring site manager proves his quality to the last

Retiring site manager proves his quality to the last Multi-award winning site manager Ged Frodsham has been given his last ever National House-Building Council (NHBC) ‘Quality' award as he prepares to retire after five decades in the construction industry. He will, however, get one last chance at further building honours as he now goes forward to compete for a coveted ‘Seal of Excellence' in the NHBC's annual Pride in the Job awards, which would put him in the top 100 of 18,000 site managers across the UK.

Ged (pictured), 65, who lives in Rainford, near St Helens, and has a host of accolades under his belt, has received his latest award for his achievements at Redrow Homes' Arcon Village, in Horwich, where he has led the construction team transforming a former bleachworks into a stunning mix of bespoke apartments and houses.

One of only 400 site managers to win an NHBC ‘Quality' award this year - and one of eight Redrow site managers enjoying success - Ged's achievement reflects the calibre of his site management, including technical knowledge, consistency in the build process and leadership and organisational skills.

He said: "After 37 years with Redrow it's strange to think I won't be working on site every day but it's good to go out on a high with yet another ‘Quality' award. I've won quite a few over the years and this is the third in the row for Arcon Village, a challenging site which involves converting Grade II listed old industrial buildings to residential use."

Originally a bricklayer by trade, Ged has been in the construction industry for 50 years in total. Thirty seven of those have been spent with Redrow or housing companies subsequently acquired by Redrow.

Retiring this week, he's looking forward to a holiday in Devon with his wife Norma but has no fixed plans for his retirement other than some DIY on his own home.

Asked what advice he'd give to his successor to help them reach the same dizzy heights of success in the NHBC ‘Pride in the Job' initiative, he says: "I always tell people that you only get the standard of work you are willing to accept, so if you want a consistently high quality of workmanship never accept anything less.

"It's also important to have a good team around you as you are only ever as good as the people who work on site and the contractors you employ."

Ged will now attend a special presentation ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester in November when he will also find out if he has also won his fourth - and last - ‘Seal of Excellence'.

Homes built under Ged's award winning care and currently for sale at Arcon Village include a mix of two, three and four-bedroom stone-built cottages with current prices from £215,000 to £269,995.
