Creativity in the community

Children at Wistaston Junior School will be able to enjoy summer lessons in an outdoor classroom thanks to a generous donation from Charles Church North West. The £100 donation from the housebuilder will help fund the venture which, when completed, will consist of three semi-mature trees, hexagonal benches and picnic tables in the school’s playground.

The school was presented with the donation after 30 Year Six pupils, aged between 10 and 11, took part in a writing competition set by the housebuilder. Pupils were asked to write a short story about a newt and its adventures in and out of the pond. Winning pupil Becky Jones’ entry The adventures of Nicole the Newt was selected as the winner and Becky was rewarded with a £25 WH Smith gift voucher.

We were impressed with the high standard of all of the entries and of particular appeal was the enthusiasm and creativity illustrated in all entries. Becky Jones’ story stood out from the others and she should be applauded for her humour, imagination and creative writing skills.”

Graham Prince, acting head teacher, adds: “The children really enjoyed taking part in the writing challenge. We talked about character development, different ways of starting a story and the structure a story should have before the children wrote their stories. The donation from Charles Church will help us complete our outdoor classroom which will be used as a place for pupils to take shade from the sun, an eating area for those who bring in packed lunches and a teaching area in the summer.”
