Residents enjoy a big lunch in Kibworth

Residents enjoy a big lunch in Kibworth Residents from David Wilson East Midlands’ Kibworth Meadows development enjoyed an afternoon of food, drink and music but more importantly getting to know their neighbours, after hosting a street party in support of this year’s Big Lunch campaign.

Over 20 households from the development on Wistow Road got involved in the lunch and those who attended were asked to bring along food to share, whilst children could enjoy face painting, a bouncy castle and a ball pool. They even got the chance to climb aboard a fire engine and police car after the local fire and police stations agreed to get involved.

Jim Maudling is one of the residents who organised the lunch, he comments “I was brought up to believe that your back door should always be open to your neighbours and I want to try and re-invent that old fashioned ethos at Kibworth Meadows.

“After hearing about the Big Lunch, we thought it would be the ideal way to get the residents of the development to bond and to get to know one another. Around 85 people took part and to assist in “breaking the ice”, one neighbour came up with the idea of everyone having name badges so all could see who they were and where they lived.

“The response to the idea of the Big Lunch was great and we all pulled together to supply food, chairs, tables, gazebo’s and such like. Even some of the local businesses were contacted and very kindly supported us.

“The lunch was a fantastic success and I’m thrilled to report that all who attended thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone who got involved really mucked in and worked together to pull off an incredibly enjoyable day. There is no doubt that we have bonded as a community and people have already said that they definitely want to do it again next year!”

Philip Lacey, Sales Director at David Wilson comments “The Big Lunch proved to be a big success and it’s great to see residents coming together to enjoy events like these.

“New homes developments are not just about the houses, but also about building new communities that residents can enjoy being a part of. We want our purchasers to enjoy living at their new David Wilson development and we are pleased to have been able to get behind the lunch by supplying plates, cutlery and the electricity for the bouncy castle.”

The Big Lunch, an idea organised by the Eden Project, in partnership with MasterCard, and supported by EDF Energy and the Royal Mail Group, was created to bring people together in a sense of community and put a big smile on Britain’s face.

Paul Twivy, The Big Lunch CEO commented, “It has been exhilarating to watch the momentum grow as millions turned out on the streets to have fun, meet their neighbours and prove that Britain is far from broken. It’s time we realised that our neighbourhood is the biggest, untapped source of practical help and happiness in our lives. We hope that Sunday saw friendships forged that last long after the bunting was taken down.”
