History uncovered at Fellowes Plain in Norwich

Councillor Hereward Cooke, from Norwich City Council, was guest of honour at the official unveiling of the mother and child statue in the grounds of Fellowes Plain, in St Stephens Road. He was joined by representatives of the Norwich Society, congregation members from St Stephen’s Church – where Cllr Cooke is also the Reverend – and members of Norwich City Council.
John Mann, Managing Director of Charles Church North London, spoke at the event. He said: “Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you very much for coming along this afternoon to join us in the unveiling of the mother and child statue at Fellowes Plain.
“During the redevelopment of the former Norfolk and Norwich Hospital site, Charles Church came across a number of artifacts, one of which is the mother and child statue. The statue was designed by Sir J. Boehm in 1874 and commissioned by Sir John Bileau of Ketteringham (a generous benefactor of the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital), in memory of Lady Catherine. It was originally erected at the junction of the New Market and Ipswich Roads. Like many other artifacts found when developing at the site, Charles Church made the decision to retain the mother and child statue.”
Cllr Cooke added: “For the third time in her life, this beautiful statue of Charity giving a boy a drink has been unveiled. From her busy perch on the main road to London, and then fronting up the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital she now finds herself nestling by the side of a quiet pond. She will bring much pleasure to the residents of the new Charles Church development and has already won plaudits from the amenity groups who have wondered when she was to be refurbished and returned to public life. Here she now is and as the Vicar of the Parish Church of St Stephen`s I have been pleased to unveil her and to wish her well in her new surroundings"
There are a selection of one and two bedroom apartments available in The Administration Building at Fellowes Plain, which is the latest phase of the development to be released. The Administration Building is located at the front of the development and offers just 18 refurbished apartments, which have been designed sympathetically around the building’s original features.
