School children name landmark development in Blaydon
Primary school pupils Daniel Thomas and Andrew Tait have created a name for a landmark development which will remain forever in the region’s history books. The boys, from St Mary & St Thomas Aquinas RC School in Stella, were the winners of a competition run by Barratt Homes to come up with a name and logo design for their new housing development which will stand on the site of the former Stella South power station in Blaydon. And as the attractive new properties rise from the derelict land Daniel (8) and Andrew (11) will be able to see the name Riverside Crescent and its colourful logo on hoardings, advertising and brochures for years to come.
“We were delighted when Barratt asked us to help come up with a name for the development,” said headteacher Elaine White. “The children can see the site from the playground and we’ve looked out at the dereliction for many years now so we’re really looking forward to seeing the houses develop.
“The children have all worked very hard coming up with ideas and I think Andrew’s name ‘Riverside Crescent’ and Daniel’s logo with its bright houses and river setting are wonderful choices.”
As well as seeing their ideas come to life the boys received £50 gift vouchers and a £250 cheque for the school. Winners from each year were also presented with gift vouchers.
Barratt Newcastle Managing Director Bernard Rooney presented the prizes saying: “We had a wonderful time judging the entries, the levels were very high with a lot of attention to detail. We hope Daniel and Andrew will enjoy looking at their designs for many years to come – and you never know it might even give them a taste for a future creative career!”
Riverside Crescent is a joint development between Barratt Homes and Persimmon Homes creating 522 properties on 35 acres of land. The premium riverside location in this easy commuting area is expected to draw many buyers.
