Demolition works commence at Gladedale site in Sunderland

The building, which has lain derelict for 16 years and has been persistently targeted by vandals, will be demolished and replaced as part of the development which comprises of 77 two, three and four bedroom affordable homes by Gladedale.
Gladedale is also investing over £350,000 in the local community to provide improvements to a number of local amenities. These will include the provision of new children’s play facilities, public open space as well as investing in new educational facilities.
The £8 million redevelopment project, awarded planning permission by Sunderland Council earlier this year, will be situated to the rear of Neil Street together with the former Bat Cave Public House and Cross House on the junction with Pemberton Bank, Easington Lane’s main road.
The demolition will give much needed road safety improvements to the junction by enhancing visibility for drivers.
Hetton Councillor, David Tate, said: “No doubt the people of Hetton will agree with me and welcome the demolition of this eyesore. The forthcoming Gladedale development will be an asset to the area and local community by providing much-needed regeneration.”
Ed Alder, Land Director of Gladedale in the north east of England, said: “Following the granted planning permission earlier this year, we are pleased to mark the beginning of this project with the demolition of the Bat Cave.
“Locally referred to as an eyesore, this former pub is set within a prominent position in the village but over the years has been targeted by vandals and fallen into disrepair. The pub will be replaced by two storey apartments and construction will begin when market conditions are right.
“Our investment will create much-needed new housing and transform this now derelict site into a vibrant and highly sought-after housing development, offering a varied affordable housing portfolio of Primo by Gladedale family homes designed to cater for a wide range of homebuyers.”
Gladedale provides quality housing in and around the north east of England, and the £8 million redevelopment project at Neil Street in Easington Lane follows the company’s successful developments in Hetton le Hole, South Hetton and Peterlee.
