TAP to launch Web Portal for mobile phones

9th September 2009 Print
The growing use of mobile phones has led Star Alliance to develop a Common IT Mobile Platform. The web portal can be accessed anywhere and allows airline companies to offer their customers services through their mobile phones. TAP, together with Egyptair and South African Airways, was among the first members of Star Alliance to launch their portal as part of this project.

Each airline company has designed its portal in accordance with its own particular specifications, using the common technological standards supplied by Star Alliance.

"Star Alliance’s Common IT Mobile Platform is another example of the advantages provided by a standardised solution within the alliance. With the technological base in place, more airlines will be ready to offer services through mobile phones, as the interface between the airline companies’ systems and the mobile information portal is simple and flexible. In addition, this alliance solution will make it easier in the future to include content from all the airlines by using the mobile platform,” said Jaan Albrecht, CEO of Star Alliance.

The mobile web portal is specifically designed to provide information and services to the customer on the move. The content is being launched in various phases and currently offers a range of information including flight times, departures and arrivals in real time, available airline lounges, a currency converter, weather forecasts and information on destinations.

More interactive content will become available in the next few weeks, enabling customers to check the status of their Frequent Flyer programme, receive notifications in case of flight irregularities, check in online, select their seats from a seating plan and use mobile phone boarding passes with 2D barcodes.
