Lufthansa expands long-haul network

7th November 2007 Print
From next summer, Lufthansa is expanding its long-haul network. In April 2008, Germany’s largest carrier will launch a new route to Seattle and recommence services to Calgary from Frankfurt. Flights from Munich to Singapore will also be resumed.

“The new flights will enable us to further expand our leading position in the North American and Asian markets. Moreover, the non-stop connections will ideally augment our route network and save our passengers valuable time,” says Karl Ulrich Garnadt, a member of the Board of Lufthansa Passenger Airlines.

“ In future, Lufthansa customers will have a choice of 22 destinations in Canada and the United States. Singapore, meanwhile, will be the eighth destination in Asia that we will serve direct from Munich.” Tickets for all the new flights can be booked in Economy, Business and First Class. These are the latest additions to the German flag carrier’s long-haul network. Only recently, Lufthansa announced three new services from Düsseldorf to Chicago, New York and Toronto, which will be introduced in the 2008 summer timetable.

New Lufthansa service to Seattle: From 30 March 2008, Lufthansa will fly daily from Frankfurt to Seattle, the largest city in the Pacific North West region. The thriving commercial metropolis in the US state of Washington will thus become Lufthansa’s 18th destination in America.

The Port of Seattle is an important hub, particularly for trade with Asian countries. The key, export-oriented sectors based there are the aerospace industry (Boeing), the iron and steel industry and wood processing. The university city is also home to many global companies. The Space Needle, which was erected for the 1962 World’s Fair, is the architectural symbol of the Seattle. The introductory fare to this new Lufthansa destination starts at 589 euros.

Non-stop to Calgary in the foothills of the Rockies: On 14 April 2008, Lufthansa is launching a new daily Airbus A330-300 service to the Canadian metropolis of Calgary. The city in the Province of Alberta is one of the most dynamic economic centres in Canada and has a strong energy and chemicals sector.

As Alberta is rich in petroleum and natural gas deposits, drilling and reprocessing are impor tant industries. Calgary lies in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and is close to many famous ski resorts such as Lake Louise and Sunshine Village. In the summer months, visitors can enjoy some of Canada’s most stunning scenery in the various national parks in the region. Alberta is also a paradise for cowboy and Western fans. The affordable introductory fare starting at 649 euros puts Calgary within easy reach.

The new Lufthansa flight is in addition to the existing daily codeshare service operated by Star Alliance partner Air Canada between Frankfurt and Calgary. Including the connections already scheduled for next summer between Düsseldorf and Toronto (operated by Lufthansa) and the flights between Frankfurt and Ottawa (operated by Air Canada), both airlines will be able to offer their customers up to 22 flights a week between Germany and Canada.

Flights to Singapore ex Munich: Lufthansa is also further expanding its services to Asia. From 8 June 2008, it will operate an Airbus A340-300 service to Singapore, five times a week. The island city has one of the highest standards of living in Asia. Singapore is not only one of the most important centres of commerce and industry, but also a key financial centre. More than 130 banks are based in the Asian metropolis.

The commercial port has been extended, making it one of the largest in the world. Its cultural diversity and its many sights and attractions help to make Singapore an attractive destination, particularly for tourists. The city’s colonial past is still apparent in many parts of this ultra-modern metropolis. Singapore is also an ideal stopover en route to Australia or the Pacific region. The new flights out of Munich will thus complement the daily service to Singapore operated from Frankfurt. Introductory fares begin at 649 euros.

The fares quoted above are valid from now until 31 December 2007, subject to availability. They include all taxes, fees and the Lufthansa Ticket Service Charge of fifteen euros for bookings made online at Lufthansa.com. Miles & More members can collect miles on these flights.
