Discover a flavour of Berlin with Lufthansa
Over the next few weeks, Lufthansa will be treating its passengers to a wide range of gourmet treats during a series of culinary campaigns it is running on board its aircraft and at airport lounges.From 19 to 25 August, as part of the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, of which Lufthansa is a national partner, the airline will be inviting Business Class passengers on selected domestic routes to discover the culinary flair of Germany's capital city.
Under the motto "Discover Berlin", passengers on all domestic flights departing from Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Dusseldorf will have an opportunity to try such traditional Berlin specialities as smoked pork fillet with pea puree, curry sausage salad, calves liver mousse with apple and onion chutney and Havel pike perch with tartar of Teltow turnips. They will also receive a top quality pocket map of Berlin to encourage them to explore the city.
For five weeks from 20 August, Lufthansa will have a number of exceptional culinary delights in store for Business Class travellers on various European routes. Each Thursday, the airline will offer its passengers a Bento box with Asian delicacies. The selection will include the finest sushi, maki and other tidbits, such as chicken braised in soy sauce, noodle salad, green seaweed salad, beef salad and exotic fruits. The Japanese Bento box tradition dates back to the 5th century and is based on the art of creating a visually appealing meal packed in a lunch box. The contents of Lufthansa's Bento box are designed by Lufthansa chefs in collaboration with Hiroshi Akutsu, the renowned master sushi chef of the Medici Restaurant in Baden-Baden.
Lufthansa passengers flying First Class can look forward to ice cream specialities during the summer months. On long flights during the day, they will have a choice of lime sorbet with Champagne, a strawberry cup, Tartufo or a classic mixed ice with cream. Until the end of August, on long routes within Europe and on domestic German flights from Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Dusseldorf, Business Class passengers will be offered ice cream in a cone.
The popular "Blue Hour" will be resumed at the beginning of September. Every Friday from then on, Business Class passengers on selected domestic German and European flights will be offered a special drink to start the weekend. From 4.30 pm until the late evening, they can look forward to an international cocktail such as a Cosmopolitain or a Mai Tai, with accompanying menu variations to match the country of origin of the cocktail in question.
During the Oktoberfest, from 19 September to 4 October, Bavarian specialities will be served on all long-haul flights from Munich. In First Class, starters will include pretzel dumplings in a beer-and-vinegar dressing with fresh chanterelle mushrooms, hot smoked char with an apple and fennel salad and the famous Munich white sausage. As a main dish, passengers can choose veal shank with cabbage and potato salad, Bavarian game fish ragout with root vegetables and boiled potatoes with parsley, duck with Bavarian red cabbage and potato dumplings or mushroom ragout with slices of fried bread dumpling.
The Oktoberfest menu will be rounded off with Bavarian cream with fruit skewers or hot plum strudel with soft cheese. First Class passengers will also be given a beer glass as a souvenir. In Business Class, passengers will receive an attractive scarf of the type normally worn with the national costume, while Economy Class passengers will be offered a spicy Lebkuchen heart to round off the Bavarian menu. On domestic German and European routes, passengers will be served Bavarian treats and a special Oktoberfest praline to get them into the mood for the world's largest public festival.
In the second half of September, passengers at selected Lufthansa lounges at Frankfurt will have a chance to try out some Viennese specialities. As part of a cooperation with the Vienna Tourist Board, Lufthansa will be serving typical Viennese delicacies. In addition, three types of Viennese wine, jams from the Austrian capital and Viennese pastries will be offered, as well as Austrian pralines. A competition will be held in the lounges with attractive prizes, including 99 items by Viennese designers and 999 bottles of Viennese wine.
As part of its "Special Moments" inflight concept, Lufthansa incorporates innovative, out-of-theordinary ideas to pamper passengers in all travel classes on long-haul flights. These include surprising passengers with little gifts to mark a special occasion and treating them to outstanding culinary experiences.
On European routes, Lufthansa invites passengers, as part of its "Discover Flavour" programme, to savour a wide range of flavours, ingredients and styles of regional cuisine during their flight. Besides the special Business Class menus, Lufthansa also creates ideas for seasonal and special occasions such as cultural or sports events.
