A Canadian escape amid the trees

27th April 2007 Print
Rockwater Secret Cove Resort An escape amid the trees evokes a treehouse adventure like no other - this isn’t your childhood treehouse, far from it. At Rockwater Secret Cove Resort on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, slumber amid the trees proves a decidedly more adult adventure, thanks to the destination’s own Tenthouse Suites.

Forget the fortress of steel or the oasis to ward off marauding pirates (you were just 10 years old after all), at Rockwater, unique (and stylish) tents will conjure less of days past and more of a desire to experience something designed with the big kids in mind.

Nestled amid arbutus trees, tents feature private ocean views, king-sized beds, fireplaces, heated floors and hydrotherapy tubs. Heck, this is less about camping and more about luxuriating. Just a quick hop, skip and a jaunt north of Vancouver, and tucked into a cove, you’ll feel far from it all while snuggled within your own tented oasis.

What more could you ask for while exploring this little slice of heaven? Perhaps an adventure to match your setting…say, for example, a moonlit paddle with a gastronomic twist which promises plenty of kayaks and culinary surprises for everyone.

With the resort’s two-night Moonlight Paddle package on Halfmoon Bay, certified adventure guides from Halfmoon Sea Kayaks will orient you to the landscape (is that an otter? A seal, or even an eagle?) before leading you to a secluded island beach as twilight descends.

Executive Chef Steven Ewing will provide all the light you need – as the inspired gastronome shines with his al fresco offerings which may include Salt Spring Island lamb, local albacore tuna and even locally foraged wild mushrooms (paired, of course, with some of BC’s best vintages).

The return paddle home promises a sprinkling of the surreal as guests don headlamps and even attach glow sticks to their transport. Post paddle, a nightcap on the deck of your suite proves the perfect dénouement to your sunscreen-free excursion.

Also featuring two breakfasts, one lunch and all instruction, this package is sure to lure – but only during the full moon. You can ponder your next jaunt over that cocktail, in your suite…ah yes, back to those suites. Time to summon some new memories among the trees - in a very grown up fashion.
