Holistic holidays in Cuba

27th September 2007 Print
For almost 30 years, Skyros, the market leader in mind, body and spirit holidays, has built an unrivalled reputation in offering its world-weary visitors inspiration, renewal and adventure. In the summer it's Greece. In the winter it's Thailand, Cambodia and Cuba.

Whatever the venue, those who have sampled its delights are won over by its vision and remain committed to its dream. Time Out summed up the Skyros experience as “the sheer, crazy overwhelming joy of letting go and feeling alive”. Likewise, Elle Magazine described Skyros as “magically successful thanks to its unique alchemy of people, settings and ideals”.

Skyros-in-Cuba

Havana is one of the oldest, grandest and safest cities in the Americas. It is also the perfect place to learn Cuba's national dance - Salsa. In its enhanced ambience, a local Cuban dance partner will always be there to mentor each Skyros participant's progress and ensure a high quality learning experience. Outside Salsa course hours, Clem Axel, Skyros' man in Havana, will help people gain a good understanding of Cuban history and culture.

The day begins with some gentle yoga followed by a delicious breakfast and the Salsa tuition. The course, held in the modern naturally-lit poolside venue of the 4 star Havana Libra hotel, is suitable for all levels. Later in the day, course participants are free to stroll leisurely in the city, where they can get a glimpse of what life looks like without McDonald's, and enjoy Havana's rebel status, which is a crucial part of its allure. The programme includes optional excursions to beaches, a traditional cigar factory and local beauty spots plus a half-day Havana city tour.

Evenings offer balmy weather and a chance to walk the many and varied shopping streets of La Habana Vieja, the Old Havana, visit dazzling nightclubs and shows, even dance Salsa in the streets! The Cubans, even if life comes with plenty of grit, gripes and its share in inequalities, have never lost their passion for partying - the nightlife of their capital is legendary. If you haven't danced Salsa under a Havana moon, you haven't lived ...

Skyros-in-Thailand

Skyros-in-Thailand carries the unique Skyros spirit spiced with Thai flavours. Its course facilitators include Dr Dina Glouberman, author of The Joy of Burnout and a BBC1's Heaven and Earth Show guest, novelist Susan Elderkin, named by Granta as one of the 20 best young British novelists, and internationally known singer and voicework teacher Chloe Goodchild.

The holiday is hosted in the exclusive Aiyapura Resort and Spa sited in a spectacular private bay on the magical island of Koh Chang. Here one can delight in watersports, sip cocktails at sunset, enjoy the world-renowned Thai cuisine in restaurants overlooking the sea, and spend the nights dancing. The health spa, set amongst tropical gardens and caressed by gentle ocean breezes, is a dream place to unwind while being pampered in a flower-filled bath. Koh Chang is very safe and hassle free.

Skyros-in-Paradise, as many course participants have called it, offers an unforgettable adventure in the course of which one can make wonderful new friends, enjoy a different culture and be inspired by it. As Mariella Frostrup wrote in The Independent after a Skyros-in-Thailand break, “let your hair down, take risks, expand horizons - go on a Skyros holistic holiday!”

Skyros-in-Cambodia

This is a 10-day overland tour from Bangkok to the world-renowned early twelfth century Khmer temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. These temples are the epitome of classical Khmer architecture and one of the world's architectural wonders.

The trip includes visits to the main temples, a trip to Tonle Sap great lake, visits to the Fine Art School and local markets and sessions with the Skyros guide. The group is then back in Thailand, staying for three nights in the wonderful Jungle House in Khao Yai National Park which has a variety of wildlife. Adventurous people can also take a night safari or camp out in the jungle with rangers. Back in Bangkok there is a full day for sightseeing, or a visit to the famous Chatuchak weekend market.
