On November 16, 1907, thousands of citizens of the new state of Oklahoma crowded the street in front of Guthrie’s Carnegie Library to witness the beginning of state government. Guthrie, Oklahoma’s first capital, now the nation’s largest historical district, serves as the setting for the re-enactment of events that took place on Oklahoma’s first Statehood Day. Citizens, state dignitaries, historians and others stage the announcement of the presidential proclamation, the gubernatorial inauguration, and an inaugural parade with antique cars, horse drawn vehicles and marching bands. A barbecue in a historic park follows but allows visitors ample time to make the 35-minute drive to Oklahoma City for Spectacular afternoon and evening activities.
