Follow in the tracks of the ice road truckers
If you been following the truckers on the History Channel making their way on the Ice Road up to the Diamond Mines in Canada's Northwest Territories, here's your opportunity to follow in their tracks. True North Safaris is offering excursions from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories on the ice road that is used to supply the diamond mines in Canada's arctic.10,000 truck loads of suppliers to the diamond mines are hauled over the 2 month ice road season. From February, when the ice is thick enough to support the heavy loads until the end of March when the portages begin to melt, there is a truck averaging every 15 minutes.
The speed of these heavy loads is carefully monitored as the weight on the ice causes a wave that moves with the speed of the vehicle. If it travels too fast the ice shatters and breaks and could cause a break through.
True North Safaris vehicles are outfitted with satelite phones and two way radios so we can monitor and talk to the "Ice Road Truckers".
Day one travel from Yellowknife to Mackay Lake Lodge. Photo opportunities include the frozen land scape and wildlife and, at night the aurora. Day two drive to the outskirts of a diamond mine with more photo opps. Spend the second night back at the lodge. Day three arrive back in Yellowknife by 4PM. These three day, two night excursions are offered in February and March.
