Up Pompeii – and Naples
For a winter city break with a difference, head south suggests The Italian Connection and discover Naples and nearby Pompeii which reveals more about the every day life of the Roman citizen than any other site.An easy half hour by train from the city, Pompeii (open daily from 0830 to 1700 November to March) covers a huge area and – even without the peak season crowds – still requires at least a full day to explore its forum, amphitheatre, merchant’s houses, gladiator barracks, bath house, villas, streets and temples and yes even brothels!
Back in Naples, visitors should also allow time to visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale (open daily in winter from 0900-2000) where the best of Pompeii’s mosaics and murals have found their way.
Other cultural Neopolitan highlights include the Teatro San Carlo (the largest opera house in Italy), the Duomo and the church of Santa Chiara which has cloisters covered in colourful majolica tile depicting pastoral scenes. Not to forget the endless range of shops which map the glorious streets of this ever buzzing city.
