Off the beaten track in Bhutan

14th February 2008 Print
Off the beaten track in Bhutan Long before London went smoke-free, the small Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan stubbed out smoking years ago. Under the watchful eye of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Bhutan is also free from industrial pollution, the roads are not congested, and the forests, fertile valleys and snow-capped peaks are pristine. Crime is almost non-existent, and the locals warm and generous.

India specialist Colours of India has a new 14-night trip exploring the valleys of Bhutan. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas from Dochu La, amble through the corridors of the Punakha Dzong, and hike through the Bumthang Valley. You can also hike through rural pastures and unspoiled Rhododendron forests, or engross yourself in the traditions of a Buddhist ceremony.

Spend two nights at Zhiwa Ling in Paro, with spa facilities, and a temple with beams recovered from a 250-year-old monastery. From there we head to Amankora Punakha for 3 nights. Based around a traditional farmhouse built by Her Majesty the (Bhutanese) Queen Mother, Amankora Punakha is surrounded by orchards of tropical fruit and paddy fields.

There are eight suites with views of the valley and the Punakha Dzong (monastery) in the distance. Days spent here are relaxed and indulgent - following a hiking trail, relaxing in the spa with sauna, steam, massage and meditation, or gently floating down the river.

Next stop is a 2-night stay at Mountain Lodge in Jakar, set in the Bumthang Valley, with basic twin rooms, and a traditional bukhari (wood-burning stove).

Our last two stops feature 3 nights at the Yankhill Resort in Trongsa, precariously perched on the edge of the Trongsa Dzong, an impregnable fortress built into the side of the hill and includes countless courtyards, passageways and corridors. The itinerary ends with a 3-night stay at the Amankora Thimpu overlooking the Thimpu Valley.

Guide price per person is £3,742, including all international flights, domestic ground transfers and all accommodation in Bhutan fully inclusive.
