Oberammergau Passion Play spectacular
Saga Holidays is offering customers a once in a decade opportunity – to witness the world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play. Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Bavarian mountains, 2,000 villagers of Oberammergau will perform their remarkable passion play between May and October in 2010 to over 500,000 visitors. The spectacle, which is held once every ten years, was first performed in 1634 as a result of a pledge to God by the residents of the village if they were spared from the Bubonic Plague.
More than 370 years later, and the visually spectacular event, which sometimes has over 600 actors on stage at the same time, is as popular as ever. Performances which start in the afternoon and continue into the evening commemorate the last week in the life of Christ, his journey into Jerusalem, his death and resurrection.
Saga, expects to take around 15,000 customers to Oberammergau throughout 2010 and is now taking advance bookings for those wishing to experience the unique open-air event. In 2000, almost 10,000 people travelled with the company to see the passion play.
For 2010, Saga has a range of holidays planned from 5, 7 and 9 night stays in Austria, Italy and Switzerland as well as 14-night fully escorted coach tour, with selected singles holidays are also available.
All passion play holidays include a one or two night stay in Oberammergau and a ticket to the play.
Prices start from £999 per person. The passion play takes place from 15 May to 3 October.
