Cycling families go camping

20th March 2008 Print
Cycling families go camping Many families have difficulty with the prohibitive costs of cycling tour holidays and inability of hotel and B&B accommodation providers to adequately cater for their children.

But a Suffolk based company is combining the facilities of a typical cycling tour with a camping holiday to provide a new holiday innovation aimed at families.

This new concept has been developed by Ian Peet, director of camping holiday operator Go Camping UK, who devised the idea after a brainstorming session to diversify his camping business. He claims that, “families can now enjoy a summer cycling tour in the UK, which caters for the whole family and costs substantially less than traditional cycling holidays.”

Whilst hotels and B&Bs cater well for couples and singles, families have often looked towards self catering alternatives in cottages, chalets and campsites. These types of accommodation have allowed families to let their children have greater freedom to play and make noise whilst providing families with a more cost effective and suitable form of accommodation. The problem created by cycling tours, is the fact that most self catering accommodation providers won’t rent by the day, especially in peak season when children are on holiday.

Many families have to settle for something less than what they would prefer. Either inappropriate and expensive hotel accommodation or single base holidays with bicycle hire. The only other alternative is attempting to cycle with children, tent, cooker, sleeping bag and clothes sprawling from over packed panniers! The result is that families don’t tend to go on cycling tours.

Go Camping UK claims to solve this problem by retaining typical package tour conveniences such as luggage transfer, maps, cycle equipment and breakdown help but accommodate families in fully equipped and erected tents. Families can now move along a tour and have a suitable form of accommodation along the way.

Ian Peet, director of Go Camping UK, says that, “these new holidays enable the whole family to enjoy a cycling tour at a sensible price. Camping is ideal for families; children explore, play and have fun with other children meaning parents have some time and peace to themselves. We hope it catches on, it opens up cycling holidays to a whole new market and will give many more families the opportunity to get their children into cycling and a healthy lifestyle.”

Kevin Ablitt, The Bicycle Doctor and an experienced cycling professional for the past 30 years, says “the cycling holidays provided by Go Camping UK are a brilliant idea. An innovative way to take it easy and get away from everything. They will be welcomed by families who enjoy cycling together. I am happy to endorse their holidays.”
