Sinking pound a boost for UK holidays

20th March 2008 Print
With the pound sinking to a record low against the euro today, UK holiday companies, like niche camping and cycling tour operator Go Camping UK, are hoping to benefit from consumers feeling the pinch of travelling to the EU this summer.

Today, the pound sunk to a new low against the euro. Consumers are bracing themselves for a hefty increase in the cost of European holidays. Last summer £1 would be worth roughly €1.47, now £1 has tumbled in value to a record low of €1.27 meaning that European travellers will be getting less for each pound that they spend.

A €1000 European apartment last summer would have cost the British consumer £680, with the falling exchange rate this would cost £780 today.

Amidst the financial crisis, some holiday companies which operate exclusively in the UK are hoping to benefit. Ian Peet, director of Go Camping UK, a camping and cycling tour operator in Suffolk, says that “the falling value of the pound should be good news for UK holiday operators. Britons are getting less value across Europe whilst Europeans are seeing better value in coming to the UK. Holidays in the UK are better value than ever.”

“Although the downturn in the economy and poor exchange rates affects a lot of people, we hope to capitalize on an increased demand for affordable family holidays in the UK. There is a growing desire for unusual niche holidays like ours and people now have a financial incentive to find out about the excellent holiday experiences available in the UK.”
