Hemingway's Kenya

This luxury mobile safari is based on Mbirikani Group Ranch, an unfenced area covering 136,000 hectares of land owned by the local Maasai people. In addition to exploring the ranch lands, rides also venture off into the surrounding Amboseli Eco-system and Chyulu Hills, giving riders access to over 1.4 million acres of spectacular wilderness.
During the course of the week riders discover a variety of terrain, returning late each afternoon to a stunning new camp location for a picturesque sundowner, hot shower and dinner by the fire. A volcanic area known as Lenkiloriti, is the first focus of the safari. Here, the vast Mbirikani plains, home to Zebra, Wildebeest, Giraffe and Lion, skirt the now dormant lava flows where Kenya’s last population of wild Black Rhino resides.
The Chyulu foothills, amongst some of the youngest hills in Africa, provide a magical landscape for a day’s ride. In the midst of this flat expanse dotted with massive golden volcanoes, spot Klipspringer, Baboon, Coke’s Hartebeest, Rock Hyrax and Gerenuk. After a full day’s ride up into the Chyulu Hills, riders reach Crater Camp. The camp is nestled in the forest next to a large volcanic crater overlooking the quintessential East African plains that lead up to Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Guests are invited to climb the crater in search of the rare Verreaux’s Eagle, which nests in the almost inaccessible rock outcrops that line the rim. Further explorations high into the hills reveal eerie mist-forests that dot the summit, where huge Strangler Figs create surreal cathedral-like arches.
Finally, riders head for the kopjes, huge granite outcrops in the middle of the savannah plains. The short grass plains dotted with thorn trees are perfect for long canters amongst the Zebra and Wildebeest. Climb up on top of the kopjes for a magnificent sunset and classic African panorama, dominated by Mount Kilimanjaro.
The safari now costs £1,930 p/p (8th June departure WAS £2,170 p/p and 13th July departure was £2,500) including Safarilink schedule flights between Wilson and Chyulu, tented camp accommodation, most meals and drinks, temporary membership of the Flying Doctor’s society of Africa, horse, tack and expertly guided activities.
