Explore Rishikesh and the Northern Himalayas Walk on the wild side with India specialist Colours’ 15-night itinerary through the Himalayan foothills, searching for the elusive tiger, staying in local homesteads and luxurious resorts, and taking in some of India’s key sites.

The majestic Indian Himalayas are astounding in their beauty. Known as ‘the abode of the gods’, they contain a number of fascinating towns, many of which have evolved their own unique cultures and rituals.

We discover Dharamsala in the Kanga Valley, home of Tibetan Buddhists, and where the Dali Lama was exiled. Sample the regional cuisine and shop for authentic handicrafts and artwork while there.

Mashobra restreat in the western Himalayas is a secluded retreat with breathtaking views of the woods and snow-capped peaks. Hike up to Shali Peak for a spectacular view or simply relax by the fireside in this remote retreat.

Johar Valley, an old trading route, bordering both Tibet and Nepal, offers unforgettable treks. Accommodation on this leg of the trip is either in tents or in local homesteads.

Amritsar, the capital of the Punjab, is home of the Golden Temple and Jallianwallah Bagh. Later on we head to the nearby border town of Wagah, where Indian and Pakistani soldiers try to out do each other with colourful changing of the guard displays.

Further in to the trip we visit Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world. Ashrams abound and the views are stunning, as the city straddles the Ganges and overlooks forested hills. There’s also fantastic white-water rafting and lots of trekking opportunities too.

From there we head to Delhi for a 2-night stay, then on to Agra and the Taj Mahal. Next is a stay at local homesteads along the foothills of the Uttaranchal, one of India’s northernmost states. As an honoured guest of the locals, you’ll discover life and traditions as they have been for generations.

At Corbet Hideaway Wildlife Resort we unwind in 13 acres of mango groves in charming cottages. Try your hand at archery, have a massage or simply meditate.

We wrap up the trip with a 2-night stay at the Ananda in Rishikesh, a glorious hotel clinging to the ridge in the Himalayan foothills, offering luxurious spa facilities.

Price per person is from £3649 and includes international flights, all domestic transfers, accommodation, many meals and much more.
