Get there before the 'Hawk'

28th April 2008 Print
Get there before the 'Hawk' An 80-year-old Californian has shunned retirement in favour of walking around the world. In 18 years, Harry ‘Hawk’ McGinnis has crossed all 50 states of the USA and 66 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, and expects to ‘retire from his retirement’, hang up his boots and publish a book of his epic journey in 2-4 years (give or take a few years).

If the open road is calling but you’re too afraid to ask directions, Walks Worldwide offers exceptional guided and self-guided walking tours both European and long-haul - for example in Corsica, the strenuous GR20 or more leisurely shepherds trail…

Corsica’s GR20 - 15-days, guided, departing London 27th July 2008.

The GR20 trail winds through some 200kms of incredible mountain terrain, over high ridges, down deep chasms and across granite slopes. Stay in camps, refuges, gites, or shepherds’ cabins, situated in spectacular places renowned for stunning views, fine local wines and cheese. This is an exceptional, long distance guided walk, reputed as the best and most challenging in Europe, and an incomparable experience for those who love the outdoors.

The trek costs £1,395 p/p, including scheduled flights, transfers, hotel, camping, gite and shepherd’s cabin accommodation, most meals, advance baggage transfers and the services of an experienced, qualified guide. GRADE D – strenuous & challenging.

Corsica In Style – 8-days, self-guided, departs London weekly now until October 2008.

This self-guided trek is an opportunity to bathe in the perfumes, colours and contrasting landscapes that earns Corsica, the 'mountain in the sea', its deserved reputation. Travel to the Niolu valley in the heart of the island, encircled by the island's highest mountain summits, including Paglia Orba and the Monte Cinto.

Follow old shepherds trails through fragrant pine forest, alongside tumbling mountain torrents and past inviting sun-baked rock pools, remote villages, chestnut forests and gorges. The trail leads towards the coast and the magnificent Gulf of Porto, staying in comfortable village accommodation en route.

The trek costs £1,075 p/p, including scheduled flights, transfers, 3* and above hotel accommodation, some meals, route notes and luggage transfers. GRADE B/C – moderate to strenuous.
